Ex Suspicion

The best way to distract yourself from your own drama is to focus on other people’s drama. And what causes more drama in our lives than love? And what is the most dramatic factor in love? Exes.

Yep, those boyfriends, girlfriends, baby’s daddies and mama clones that once were are a source of both entertainment and detachment from your own troubles that entire subgenres of romance fiction have be created around them. They are the ghosts that can rise and haunt you, pointing out all the mistakes and missteps you have taken or pushing you toward the most dangerous area of drama, “What if?” Of course if you are not in a romance tale, there’s a good chance an ex may end up murdering you or vice versa. Cue maniacal laughter here.

Interviews - Ava Devillis

Today is the one interview for the children’s librarian position I have been dreading and after yesterday’s stellar pyromaniac conversation I can only hope to zone out and let Betty do all the questioning before I can really check out during story time. Which is what I did.

So as you may or may not know, today’s person of interest is Ava Devillis. She has caused a few problems at story time in the past and made herself out to be somewhat a problem patron. Why, you ask, do we allow her to interview for a job? Well... the applicant pool was sparse and despite having no MLIS she does have extensive experience with building management and children. Yeah, I know, the MLIS thing made me say “whoa” to the whole thing, too, but times are tough. We could potentially pay a “Children’s Program Director” much much less than a full on librarian if she had a popsicle’s chance on a Mississippi sidewalk of me agreeing to hire her.

So she came in, on time and rather fetchingly dressed. For all her mental concerns, I can say that Ms. Devillis does cut a striking figure as well as exude a confident, motherly attitude for one so young. Then she opened her mouth.

Monkey George Makes Me Smile

Ava Devillis and her child attended story time this afternoon. This is the first time since her declaration that a bathmat could lead a better story time than I could. The two of them sat in their previous place outside the circle and ignored my reading.

Halfway through my inspired reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, her cell phone blowed up, as the kids say.

Ah, justice. Just as I was about to admonish her, however, she stood up and walked out of the library to take her call. It kind of hurts when the enemy is polite.

I continued as the happy catepiller went through his day and noticed that while Ms. Devillis was outside her son kept looking over at our circle. By the time the book had ended, he had crept closer and joined in, clapping when the story came to a close.

I high fived a series of excited toddlers and stood to make my way out of the reading area when I felt a tug at my pants.
